Charles became an attorney and married Emily Pitkin on April 29, 1852; performed by John Rumley, minister of the gospel, witness John C. Manson.
Charles and Emily had nine sons born between 1853 and 1874 - Edward, Henry, George, Charles Raymond, Charles Randolph, James, Frederick D., John S., and Herbert Thomas.
By the 1880 census, the family was living in New Bern, where Charles was a lawyer.
